GIRLS WITH PEARLS BY CAROLINE SIKKENK
"Girls with Pearls" is an inspiring project that adds a modern twist to the works of the famous Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer. Photographer Caroline Sikkenk captures Vermeer's sense of wonder through her use of light, color, and composition, and also conveys a message of diversity and unity through her contemporary interpretation. This project offers a unique opportunity to explore the world of Vermeer through words and images.
Caroline Sikkenk has been fascinated by the Dutch Masters and their exceptional attention to light and detail since studying at the Photo Academy in Amsterdam. This fascination led her to create a series of photos inspired by Vermeer's works, captured in historic locations in Delft that have a connection to the artist. The models in the photos are everyday people that Caroline encountered, such as on the street, at the hairdresser, or a concert. The clothing worn by the models is contemporary fashion, and each garment is unique, just like the pearl that the model wears. Therefore, it doesn't matter whether the model is a girl or a boy, young or old, or what their skin or hair color is. Each model is a unique pearl in itself!
The photos from this project have been exhibited at the Vermeer Center in Delft, some of which are now part of the center's permanent collection, the Mauritshuis in The Hague, and the MVVO Art Show in New York.
